However, it is still considered an important part of Fairmountian history because it helped start the fire that destroyed much of downtown during World War II.

Fairmont, West Virginia is a small town located in Mingo County, West Virginia. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mingo County and part of the Wheeling-Charleston metropolitan area. The first settler in Fairmont was Abram Knight who came from Massachusetts in 1786. He built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the Potomac River. The first post office in Fairmont was established in 1827 and named for Abram Knight. In 1829, John Fitch erected a log courthouse which served as the county seat until1900 when it was moved to Wheeling. In 1900, Charles Goodspeed founded what became known as Goodspeed Paper Company which manufactured paper products such as magazines and newspapers. The company grew rapidly during World War I and produced materials for military use including artillery shells, clothing and ammunition. After the war, Goodspeed sold his interest in the company to J W Hillman who renamed itHillman Paper Company Incorporated (HPCI). HPCI continued to produce paper products until they were acquired by United Paperworkers of America (UPWA) in 1984. UPWA merged with North American Paper Association (NAPA) to form National Allied Trade Union Corporation (NATUC) which eventually became United Steelworkers of America (USW). In 2002, NATUC merged with Teamsters International Union Local 522(TWU-522) to form Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1021(ATUU-1021). Today, Fairmont is part of the United States Steelworkers District 11 that includes Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Scranton Division and Stratholme Aluminum Ltd.'s Monaca Division

On February 14, 1850, Deerfield Township was renamed Fairmont Township after the fashionable New York City hotel where George Washington stayed while visiting his home state.
