Fairmont is a small town in Logan County, West Virginia. The population was 2,851 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Logan County. Fairmont is part of the Wheeling-Fremont, WV-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what would become Fairmont were Methodist missionaries who came overland from Kentucky in 1828. A post office called Fairmont was established in 1830, and remained in operation until 1907. The town was founded on a tract of land that had been deeded to John Burt by his father-in-law William Turney. The original buildings were constructed out of logs and red sandstone blocks; they included a store, courthouse, schoolhouse, Temperance Hall and other public buildings. The first postmaster was Jno Cranch (1830-1835). In 1838 local resident Nancy Hanks became the first woman to vote when she cast her ballot at a general election held for residents of Logan County. In 1849 Major General George Washington Hancock donated 10 acres (40 hectares) to Fairmont for use as an agricultural fairgrounds; these grounds still feature today as part of the fairgrounds complex located off US Route 211 about east of Fairmont proper. In 1860 local resident Elijah Peebles organized a Masonic lodge with seven members and built the first Masonic temple in what would become Fairmondt Village; it still functions as one of the few functioning lodges withinFairmount Township today In 1865 localresident Isaac Totten erected a two story log schoolhouse which served as both educational and social center for early Fairmount residents The growth of industry took hold after World War I when blast furnaces began production at nearby Wheeling Steel Company; this led to an increase in traffic through town which required more space and services available to locals including residences such as homes on Market Street which are now listed on the National Register Of Historic Places . Withdrawn from service during World War II due to wartime restrictions on mining operations, many businesses closed or shifted their focus outsideof town following that conflict ; some such survivors reopened shortly afterwards but most shuttered again after returning home .
