In 1881, the original Fairmont Hotel was built on West Virginia's Elk River. It became one of the most popular hotels in the area and was known for its unique style and architecture. In 1915, the Fairmont Hotel became a part of the United States Department of Agriculture and served as a headquarters for many government programs. The hotel closed its doors in 1978, but reopened as a museum in 1984.
