In 1868, the first factory in Fairmont, West Virginia produced firearms. The factory was owned by John D. Winchester and run by his son John A. Winchester. Fairmont is a town in Marshall County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 3,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling–Charleston, WV-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1838 and named for Colonel Fairmont of Philadelphia. The first post office was established in 1841. In 1861, Fairmont became the seat of Marshall County after it was organized from parts of Preston and Sharpsburg counties. In 1865, Marshall County was divided into three districts: Eastern District (including Fairmont), Western District (including Wheeling), and Central District (including Parkersburg). At the end of 1865, Central District included both Fairmont and Parkersburg. In 1881, the town suffered a devastating fire that destroyed most of what remained of its downtown buildings and killed dozens of people; however, fairmountians rebuilt quickly with help from private donations and government assistance. In 1902,fairmountians elected their first Mayor James C Miller who led them through World War I before dying in office in 1923; his widow served as mayor until her death in 1951 when she also passed away; during her time as mayor many construction projects were undertaken such as enlarging the local high school which doubled its size between 1922-1948 In 1955-1957 Fairmont had its only tornado outbreak when some trees near Main Street caught on fire

Fairmont was founded in 1826 as a small hamlet on the Eastern Branch Potomac River. It grew rapidly during the early 19th century as a result of its location on the border of two large coal fields and its access to railroads and natural resources. The town became an important manufacturing center during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with many industries including textiles, automobiles, metalworking and agriculture. During World War II Fairmont played an important role in military production by supplying weapons to both Allied and Axis forces. After the war Fairmont experienced rapid growth as a result of new industrial development, but has since declined relative to other nearby towns. Today Fairmont is largely rural with few amenities available outside of its own town limits.
In 1847, the United States surveyed and mapped the area that would become Fairmont County. At first, it was thought that this area including present-day Huntington and Parkersburg would be part of West Virginia. However, in 1850, the General Assembly decided to create a new county out of all of Kentucky west of the Ohio River. The land for Fairmont was given to West Virginia by Kentucky in this agreement.
