In 1935 The American Optical Society (AOS) was founded and began producing better quality binoculars which quickly gained popularity in North America. Over time however production stopped altogether in North America due to competition from European producers. By the late 1990s most binocular manufacturers had resumed production in Europe although some continue to produce goods outside of Europe

Fairmont, West Virginia is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. Fairmont was founded in 1876 and named for Baron Fairmont of Wimpole Manor. It became an incorporated village in 1902. The post office served Fairmont from 1876 to 1902. In 1907, the town name was changed to Fairmont-Winchester after the Winchester Rifle Company. In 1926, the company merged with Colt Corporation and the town became Colt Townships No. 2 and 3 within Winchester Township No. 2. On July 1, 1960, the townships were combined into one township and re-namedFairmount Township after Mount Washington Cemetery in Winchester City where many of the original settlers had buried their families during early America's gold rush period of 1848-1859). The first settler in what is now Fairmount Township was John Houghton who arrived on July 5th, 1836 from Shrewsbury County with his family consisting of himself ( age 27), wife Martha (age 22), children George (age 6), Eliza (age 4)and John Atherton (age 2). They platted a claim on what is now known as East Side Road east of present day Winchester City limits which they named "Houghton's Corner." This location would become home to most of the township’s residents for over 100 years until it was annexed by neighboring Winchester City on November 25th 1922 due to its proximity to Interstate 50/Upshur Boulevard/City Limits Loop #1 & #2 as well as city services located there including a fire station and police department that were used throughout much of eastern Mingo County during this time period when things such as transportation were very limited or nonexistent! The first school in what is now Fairmount Township was organized September 15th, 1876 by Mrs.(?) Cook who taught three students each morning while her husband acted as teacher evenings & weekends according to local custom at that time which varied depending on whether one’s father worked outside the home or not! This first school operated out of a log cabin owned by Capt.(?) Prentice which sat across street frompresent day Indianola High School until moved into its current location near present day Lafayette Elementary School sometime between 1900-1905 following dollar bills being printed up then circulated through area businesses looking for new locations for schools so parents could buy some small change back then! Interestingly enough this initial location would be occupied again nearly seventy years later when our current high school building was built just north of Indianola Elementary School!! What an amazing story associated with those early days!!!
Fairmont was founded in 1827 by John Fairmont and his wife, Harriet. It became a resort town located on the Kanawha River. The Fairmont Hotel is still in use today.
