Fairmont is the smallest of Mingo County's six towns and is located on the banks of the Kanawha River. The first settlers in what would become Fairmont were James McMillin and his brother Alexander McMillin who arrived in 1784. James McMillin named his farm "McMillan's Ferry". George Washington traveled through Mingo County on July 10, 1789 when he was stopped by a party of men led by Captain John Armstrong at "McMillan's Ferry", about one mile downstream from present day Fairmont. In 1820, John Dickinson built a dam across the Kanawha River at what is now called Lindley Falls to collect water for farmers in nearby Wheeling. When this dam was destroyed by flooding in 1847, locals raised money to rebuild it and named it after Dickinson’s successor as governor of West Virginia Alfred Belknap Fairmount. The original stone structure still stands today near where the intersection of US 21 and US 224 lie today within walking distance of the town center (and just east of Lindley Falls). During World War II, Fairmont became an important manufacturing center for munitions production due to its location on a major weapons plant that operated out of nearby Bellefonte until 1957. In 1945, during postwar reconstruction following World War II, many mills closed down because they could not compete with cheaper American-made products coming into force following Victory Over Japan Day. However, some companies such as Alcoa continued to operate until finally shutting down in 1998 due to competition from Chinese manufacturers; however local residents have lobbied hard for Alcoa's return since then. Today much of Fairmont rests within walking distance from downtown or along Interstate 24 which travels through town making it easy access for everyone regardless of job or income level; also small businesses are beginning to reopen following market saturation with new customers coming online each day throughout summertime thanks largely to free parking availability close by all night long!

Fairmont is a town in Huntington County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 2,876 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Huntington County. The name "Fairmont" was given to the town by James K. Fairbanks, who moved his family from nearby Wheeling in 1875 and donated land for a courthouse and school. The Town of Fairmont was organized on November 1, 1879. The first post office in this community was established on November 1, 1879; it served as the village's nucleus until 1886 when it became part of the larger town of Fairmont. The first settler in this community was Josephus Aiken. In 1907–08, the townsite section of what is now Fairmount Park was annexed toFairmont and its namesake changed from "Fairemount" to "Fairmont". On July 4th 1922 fairmount park opened with an event that featured arts and crafts by local residents as well as a baseball game between noted local teams including Blue Ridge High School (now known as Garnet Valley High School) and White Sulphur Springs High School (now known as Big Spring High School). In 1933-34 there were some skirmishes between National Guard forces stationed at nearby Wheeling Heights Naval Base while farmers protesting low prices for milk rioted throughout central West Virginia during butter riots which ensued across five counties adjacent to West Virginia – Randolph, Summerset, Monongalia, Brooke and Huntington Counties - resulting in three fatalities along with seventy injuries reported statewide that day according to newspapers of that era By 1938-39 most businesses had closed down due to lack of customers during World War II because many citizens took cover in military installations or left for other parts of the country . However one business did remain open; Mr Buescher's grocery which functioned as a post office until 1951 when ZIP code 26434 became home to Manchester Armoury & Supply stores after they merged with neighboring store Wernher Bros Incorporated
