Fairmont is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,654 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1814 by James Wirt and his wife Mary Ann Wright as an agricultural settlement on the Ohio River. The name "Fairmont" is derived from the Scottish word "Fair", meaning fair or comfortable. The first settlers were farmers who built log cabins to live in while they began to grow crops. By 1830, there were twenty-five families living in Fairmont and seven churches had been established. In 1833, General A. P. Hill's army passed through Mingo County and encampment of the forces was situated near what is now Fairmont on Middle Fork of the Shenandoah River. As soon as news arrived of General Hill's march westward he ordered all citizens to arm themselves and leave their homes for safety reasons. Many people did not have enough food to support themselves so they started moving into barns or other buildings until some came up with a plan to build a fortification around what is now Fort Donelson which would become known as Donelson Park today. In 1834, John Wesley Powell became interested in exploring western West Virginia and offered land for purchase near Wellingborough if it could be determined that water sources existed within reasonable distance for irrigation purposes. He also offered financial assistance should anyone be successful in obtaining rights to drill oil wells nearby on his lands which eventually led to development of Fairmont Oil Fields today! In 1840, Judge William McKinley announced plans to create a county seat at Mingoburg on the southern bank of the Ohio River opposite Georgetown because no one wanted to live farther north than Georgetown because of its larger population base and more opportunities for business growth potentials! After much discussion it was decided that Stewartsville would be the new county seat due mainly to its location on Pennsylvania Route 20 (now US 219) and easy access by railroads! Today,Fairmount features many businesses including several banks along with three schools: Albion High School (grades 9-12), Mingo Valley Community College (classes K-12),and Cowan Creek Elementary School (elementary). There are also several antique stores located throughout town including McConnell's Antiques & Collectibles store which has been open since 1978! Additionally, there are several breweries located within walking distance such as Greenbrier Brewing Company & Brewpub #1 and Whitefish Brewery featuring handcrafted beers made from fresh produce!
The Fairmont Hotel, also known as The Fairmont West Virginia, is a historic hotel located inFairmont, West Virginia. It was built in 1904 and is a two-story, limestone building with a hipped roof. It has been remodeled three times and retains most of its original features. The Fairmont was the first permanent hotel in the town of Fairmont and the first to be built on what is now the downtown square. When it opened, it was one of the largest hotels in America and its guests included President Theodore Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. In 1934, it became home to then-Governor Earl Warren during his campaign for office. In 1963, it became home to Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library and Museum before being sold to the University of Oklahoma for use as an administrative center for that school's library system. The Fairmont continued to be used by OU until 1990 when it was donated to the state of West Virginia as part of the State Capitol Complex program.
