Fairmont is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,985 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheeling-Erie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1881 by George Fairchild and his brother Lewis Fairchild. George Fairchild had come to America from England and started a tannery in Wheeling, West Virginia. The first post office was established in 1884, and the first school was opened in 1886. In 1892, Fairmont became a full city when it incorporated as a result of an act of the Legislature. TheFairmont School District serves all of Mingo County with nine schools: two high schools (grades 9 through 12), one middle school (ages 7-8), one elementary school (ages 3-5), one special needs school (3-6), and one alternative education program (Kindergarten to 8th grade). In addition to these local public schools, there are three private schools within walking distance of Fairmont: Christ Church Academy; Mount Zion Lutheran; and American River College Prepatory School Mingo County government includes six townships and twenty-eight villages within its borders: Aldrin Township; Beech Grove Township; Blair Township; Carlson township; Cloudysville Township; Darrowsburg Township; Golden Valley Township; Harmony township ; Hardin township ; Jaramillo township ; Kinston township ; Madison borough ; Newellstown borough ; Parkersburg borough An additional village has been annexed into Mingo County since 2010: Monongalia Heights .

Fairmont is a small town in Logan County, West Virginia. The population was 1,874 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Logan County and it is also the home of Fairmont State University. They began to settle on land that now includes much of downtown Fairmont and portions of the rural areas around it. In 1835, John Prentice founded a gristmill in what is now downtown Fairmount and became one of the early farmers in the area. In 1861, after Confederate forces burned down Clarksville, West Virginia's largest town, many people decided to move to Liberty Township because of its proximity to Washington City and other large towns in Kentucky. This led to the creation of Fairmont as an independent community with its own school board and sheriff. The first post office was opened in 1865, and by 1870 there were over 100 residents living within its limits. During World War II, Fairmount was hit hard by rationing; however, it managed to remain self-sufficient until 1943 when it joined the United States Army Air Forces as part of Project Hula (Hula being Hawaiian for "fruit"). After the war ended, many residents left for various reasons; however, most returned during Reconstruction period which followed America's reconstruction following World War I. In 1975, General Electric invested $10 million into developing a new power plant at Fairmount which would provide electricity for much of central West Virginia; this project eventually led to revitalization efforts around town which continue today including improvements such as a new library and new streetlights.
