Clarksburg is a town in Jefferson County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,992 at the 2010 census. Clarksburg is home to the University of West Virginia and Mountaineer Community College. The land that would become Clarksburg was first settled by Native Americans in the 18th century. A post office called Clarksburgh was established in 1792, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1896. The name “Clarksburg” likely comes from Colonel John Clark’s survey of the area which named what became Clarksburg after him on July 2, 1792. In 1814, Indian trails connected the Susquehanna Valley with Kentucky and Ohio; one such trail led through Clarksburgh. In 1861, when Confederate General Robert Ewell started his march north from Lynchburg to besiege Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, he passed through Clarksburgh on his way south. On February 14, 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant occupied Camp Chase near present-day Oak Ridge while assaulting Petersburg Peninsula; during this time campfires were seen throughout southeastern West Virginia as Union troops burned food and munitions for warmth during their winter encampment. Aftermath of this engagement included over 1 million civilian casualties due to war-related fires across Virginia alone – an event which remains one of history's greatest tragedies perpetrated by the Union Army against its own citizens. In 1883–84 much of present-day central Jefferson County (including parts of downtown) was surveyed by Jepson & Higginson AssociatesCB&I under a contract with US Land Company; under this contract some 800 homes were built between Cedar Rapids Road and Parkersville Road north of downtown including today's University Avenue/UW Drive Campus south of downtown as well as numerous smaller tracts east and west of Main Street between Second Avenue/Parkersville Road and Seventh Avenue/UW Drive Campus; these developments are sometimes referred to as "Ridgeview" or "University Heights". A new courthouse replaced an earlier structure erected around 1800 on what is now Market Square which served as a justice court for Lower Cumberland District Court (now Kanawha Circuit Court). It opened on November 1st 1881 with Chief Justice Wirt Benson presiding over the first criminal case heard there since circuit courts had been established six years earlier pursuant to Act No 113 (March 3rd 1880). Other early judicial dignitaries who appeared before Chief Justice Benson include Judge Augustus Bancroft (1882), Judge Isaac Stevens (1885), Judges James Murchison (1888)and William Tatum(1893). In 1898 a two-story brick courthouse Annex Building containing courtroom space removed from Market Square located at 6th Street NE corner Poor House Avenues NW corner bounded by Third Avenue NE corner First National Bank Streets NW corner also known as 4th floor Masonic Temple building also known as United States Courthouse Annex Building later reoccupied by Eastern Carbide Corporation where it still stands vacated by UWC occupants following fire July 29 & 30 1980 . After World War II most residents left for various reasons including integration into neighboring communities although many local businesses continued operations until they closed or were bought out by larger companies during the early 21st century suburban migration continues with many people living within walking distance of work all along Interstate 81
