Clarksburg was founded in 1781 by the Virginia Company of Kentucky as a trading post on the Ohio River. The town became a slave-holding society and prospered until the American Revolution. After the war, Clarksburg grew rapidly as an agricultural center, becoming one of the largest slave-owning societies in America. The town's heyday came during Reconstruction after the Civil War, when it became a boomtown and major cotton port. However, following the country's economic collapse in the 1920s and 1930s, Clarksburg slowly fell into obscurity. In recent years, however, its history has been revived thanks to efforts by historians and students at local colleges and universities to document its cultural significance. The first settler in what is now Clarksburg was James Robertson who arrived in 1781 with his family from Scotland. He named his new land "Clarksburgh" after his home country (Scotland). By 1785, there were about twenty families living hereabouts. By 1805 there were over two hundred people living hereabouts including seventy slaves. In 1812 a store was built on present day Main Street where today's Post Office is located. In 1814 Timothy Pickens purchased 100 acres of land east of current day Park Avenue from Archibald Forbes for $320 dollars that he donated to build a school west of present day Park Avenue which would become known as Pickens Academy (now Appalachian State University). Pickens gave this land away so that others could learn how to farm and succeed in life if they chose to do so. The first courthouse in Clarksburg was built on Third Street between South Market Square and East Market Square (later renamed Court House Square) around 1800 by Tryon County commissioners John Fenton, William Reid & Thomas Gist among others under direction of Chief Justice John Marshall while justices Thomas Radcliffe & Ebenezer Sargent supervised construction activities along with Drury Brothers contractor Samuel Chandler Cement Masons Ltd.. It served as both court house and jail for many years before being moved to its current location on Main Street near Centerpointe Mall later called Greenfield mall where it remains today serving as part of Court Services Centers Regional District #2 (CSSRD 2) since 2000 providing justice delivery systems for all Courts located within CSSRD 2 jurisdictions across West Virginia including those within Clarkstown Municipal Court District 3 jurisdiction which includes portions of neighboring Blair County currentlyserved by Magisterial District Judge Wendell Phillips III pursuant to WVCode §39-1-b . On July 1st 1800 David Ritchie founded Brentwood Presbyterian Church near modern day Main Street/Park Avenue intersection which would later become known as First Presbyterian Church Of Clarksburg where Reverend David Ritchie officiated services until his death January 5th 1865 aged seventy five surrounded by his wife Martha Ann Ritchie their four children Susannah Jane born December 1861 Edwin Elijah born 1863 Reuben Israel born 1865 Lucy Ann died 1886 while ten grandchildren including six brothers George Washington born November 1865 Willis Hinton born February 1867 Andrew Jeremiahborn April 1870 Charles Hintonborn December 1872 are buried at First Presbyterian Cemetery adjacent thereto . From these earliest days through 1862 Reverend David Ritchie taught Sunday School Classes for three hours each morning starting at 7 AM followed by services at 10 A M daily except Sundays when service began at 6 PM due to Sabbath Lawsimposed upon Presbyterians prior to statehood in 1931 . baptisms commenced October 15th1800 Peter Deaver baptized George Washington Carters second son Lewis also baptized September 25th1801 Revd David Ritchie preached sermon entitled “A Revival”opposite Female Seminary March Term 1800 . August Shippen ordained minister May 16th1802 Father James Byrnes ordained June 21st1803 Daniel Boone married Rebecca Earnest February 9th1805 Anna Maria Elliott married Edward Everett May 20th1807 Isaac Bowen married Rachel Elizabeth Nicholson November 12nd1809 White Jethro Valentine married Rhoda Jennings October 14Th1811 Zechariah Chappell married Sarah Shadrack January 26TH 1813 This congregation would continue meeting until 1830 united with First Presbyterian Church Of Philadelphia relocated thence Clifton Road approximately one mile east then southwesterly along side line next To Herrick Mills Race Course road thence southwest along racecourse road thence northeast along Clifton Road lieing bordered thereby by Herrick Mills Race Course road northerly lying just inside line drawn between said racecourseroad & said Clifton Road joining said township thence easterly lying bordered thereby again by Herrick Mills Race Course road unto Township Limits forming part thereof . At this time [July 1st 1800] Reverend David Ritchie laid down foundation stone for first brick church building also known as “Pickens Chapel” situated northwest corner of Third St./Park Ave Str., now known as Court House Square—east side [southwest corner]of present Day Park Ave.—northwest corner [northwest corner]of Third St./Park Ave.—south side [ southeast ]of present Day Park Ave.—northern edge [northwestern edge]of Fourth St./Broadway— eastern edge [eastern edge]of Fourth St./ Broadway—
