Clarksburg is a town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 10,847 at the 2010 census. Clarksburg is the county seat of Brooke County. It lies near the Ohio River on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains and its downtown area features a Victorian-era courthouse and several other buildings from that time period. The first white person to live in Clarksburg was Abram Grimes in 1772. The first store in town was built by Joshua Mullins in 1802. Early settlers were farmers who grew corn, tobacco, potatoes, and wheat. In 1820, John Cramer established what became known as "Cramer's Corner" business district on Route 22 north of town where he sold goods such as nails and wagon parts to local farmers. In 1831, David Stephenson moved his family from Kentucky to Clarksburg for agricultural purposes and began operating a horse-drawn carriage service between Harper's Ferry and Clarksburg called "David Stephenson's Stage Coach Company". He also founded the Stephensons School which later became known as Eastern High School (now Clarkstown East Middle School). In 1835, James Minton arrived from Pennsylvania with his family to start an ice cream parlor called "Minton's Ice Cream Parlour" on Main Street in town. By 1840, about 60% of all farm produce grown in Brooke County went into production within one mile of Clarksburg; this included cotton, tobacco, potatoes, oats, hay etc., all sent by wagons or carts overland to nearby markets while being carried down the Appalachian Mountains en route to market! After America achieved independence from Great Britain on July 4th 1776 (the day before Christopher Columbus discovered what would become North America), many men decided they wanted to be part of this new nation too. Some started families here while others brought their wives with them when they crossed the Ohio River into West Virginia Territory on September 16th 1777 – six days after our Declaration of Independence was accepted by Great Britain! One such individual was John Cramer who settled here permanently with his Family around 1830 after purchasing 640 acres (2 km²) southeast of town along Ulysses S Grant Boulevard now known as Highway 82/Ulysses S Grant Way starting out as just 100 yards wide strips of meadow bordered by high trees! A post office called Clarksburgh was opened in 1836 by Fenton Woodruffs using his own personal funds after he had traveled through much of western West Virginia prospecting for coal seams during his various business ventures including owning an iron mine southwest of Pittsburgh where coal had been found but not exploited until some years later when laws were passed allowing large strikes! With this new information Mr. Woodruff set out Geological surveys for Coal Mines opening up lots more land including 8 sq mi east sidegrid lot now owned & operated by Dick Burkholder Jr., Tax assessor & current owner/operator BLM & WV Dept OF Lands
