Clarksburg is a town in Armstrong County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Armstrong County and home to the Clarksburg Air National Guard Base. The town was founded in 1881 by John S. "Jock" Forbes and named for him.

It is part of the Wheeling–Charleston, WV- VA-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Clarksburg was Nicholas Clark on July 4, 1800. He and his family set up a log cabin on what is now Main Street. Clarksburg became known for its clover production which helped to support the community during its early years. In 1812 John Crayton opened a store in the town and made it one of the most important commercial centers in central West Virginia due to its availability of goods from Kentucky and other parts of Tennessee. A post office was established at Clarksburg in 1814, and by 1828 there were twenty-two businesses operating in town with an average annual income of $5,500. In 1829 David Stone erected a sawmill on Elk Creek west of town limits and became one of first residents to own land within town limits. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Clarksville served as home to Confederate General Robert Ewell Booth's headquarters while he plotted his attempt to invade Richmond through West Virginia; however, no battle took place here as Union forces successfully blockaded Booth's force at Monongalia Gap near Strasburg before retreating back towards Lynchburg that evening In 1865 Union forces destroyed all but two buildings in downtown Clarksburg after overwhelming Confederate defenders who had taken refuge inside local grain elevators; this event marks what has been called "the final surrender" of Confederate troops in western West Virginia Following the war many businessman left Clarksville for more prosperous opportunities ahead such as Cincinnati or Louisville where prices for cotton were much lower than they were back east However some small businesses remained until around 2001 when it was decided that all but one building should be torn down due to fire codes becoming stricter with regard to energy efficiency measures
