After Cecil's death, his two daughters took over running New Beginnings until their deaths also in 1944. During World War II, Clarksburg became an important drop-off point for troopships sailing upriver to fight against Japan because it had become an important rail junction
Clarksburg was founded in 1781 by George Washington and named for the town of Clarksburg, Virginia. It served as the capital of West Virginia from 1819 to 1837 and is now the seat of Harrison County. The first post office in Clarksburg was established on July 6, 1781, and served until October 3, 1800. In 1801, Clarksburg became a state capital under West Virginia law. It was moved to Huntington in 1907 after West Virginia became a Federal Territory. The state government vacated Huntington in 1951 and relocated to Charleston when that city became the new state capital.
