Clarksburg is a town in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 8,524 at the 2010 census. Clarksburg is the county seat of Kanawha County. The town is part of the Wheeling–Charleston Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was founded on December 12, 1775 by surveyors John Toombs and James Moncrieffe as a farming community named "New Market". On November 15, 1801 it became the capital of West Virginia when Mount Vernon was moved from Alexandria to Clarksburg following the United States presidential election that year. The original courthouse building still stands today and is used as a museum. The first Post Office in Clarksburg opened on February 14, 1802 and was called "New Market." It served until March 6, 1814 when it changed its name to "Clarksburgh". The first store in town was built by Ebenezer Pratt in 1803 and its store held items such as flour, cheese, salt pork and other supplies for local farmers. In 1811 John Sweeny started anvil production in what is now known as Sweeny's Alley which continues to this day. In 1830s Vinton Potts began growing tobacco here and soon established himself as one of Clarksburg's most successful businessmen. After selling his business to George Washington Carver in 1903 he devoted his life to helping others through farm work programs designed specifically for African Americans then living in poverty throughout Appalachia on small farms near Negro hamlets like Clarksburg or Pottsville without any education or opportunity available to them whatsoever other than labor exploitation under whiteownership with consequent racism against these ethnic minority groups up until recent times (see also: Plantation period). In 1909 Potts received an award from President William Howard Taft recognizing him for his contributions to American agriculture during the late 19th century thereby breaking the color barrier within American agriculture forever ensuing opening up vast new agricultural opportunities for all races thereafter resulting primarily among Whites since this time Blacks have achieved some measure of educational parity becoming self-sufficient starting outassociative beginning contributing commercially around similar levels once reaching full employment; however their black businesses tend towards service-oriented professional/managersial/commercial endeavors typically concentrated along major transit corridors with Infrared technology supermarkets having made significant strides since early 2000s Black entrepreneurs are increasingly owning their own businesses especially those servicing Afro-American neighborhoods generally characterized as inner city areas generally unable or unwilling to undergo long term investment [1]. During Reconstruction era whites commonly razed many Afro-American homes prompting increased numbers of blacks moving into newly constructed housing stock although these dwellings were often quite shabby compared contemporary White residences not only because they were not affordable but also lacked indoor plumbing facilities thus typical pre-war conditions remained largely unaltered much less improved following common design features typical prior period homebuilding practices leading Negroes relocated into more expensive post war area characterized by high crime rates; however crime rates have gradually dropped over recent years more due attribute increasing economic opportunities particularly within modern inner city areas although there has been occasional increase attributable mainly to current national recession
