Clarksburg is a town in Logan County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,567 at the 2010 census. The Clarksburg-Boyd Airport is located in the town. The first white person to live in Clarksburg was Captain John Clifton who arrived on July 12, 1765 with his family from Virginia. He built a cabin near what is now downtown Clarksburg and named it "Clarksburgh." The first black person to live in Clarksburg was Mrs. Sarah Goodloe who arrived on October 2, 1811 from Kentucky. She and her husband bought a farm near present day downtown Clarksburg and called it "Goodloe's Farm". They had six children: four boys and two girls. In 1861, as part of the American Civil War effort against Confederate forces, Union General Ulysses S. Grant traveled through Logan County on his way to reinforce Union troops fighting in the Battle of Monongalia River Bridge over the Shenandoah River outside of Winchester, Virginia. On November 11 he stopped at Goodloe's Farm for dinner and spent the night there before continuing his journey northward that evening. At dawn he reached Chambersburgahead of schedule and entered into battle support role with Union General Ambrose Burnside leading Confederate forces opposed to General Robert Ewell's army massed around Fredericksburg southwest of Charlottesville, VA., during November 12–15 1862 known as the Battle of Chancellorsville (Second Battle of Bull Run). Aftermath estimated 6500 casualties including 500 dead outright while 14000 Confederates retreated back across Rappahannock River without total defeat or surrender; this event became known as 4 miles or "the turning point" of the war for Union cause after which Confederate forces shifted their attention away from Washington D . Clarksburg is a town in Blair County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 10,828 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Blair County. Clarksburg was founded in 1827 and named for General John F. Clarks by his adjutant general, James A. MacLean. The first settler in Clarksburg was Nicholas Deane who arrived on July 1, 1827. He built a cabin on a hill near what is now Main Street and First Avenue. The town began to form from lots donated by settlers in 1829 and 1830. In 1830, Stephen Wofford donated land to make up what is now the eastern edge of Clarksburg Township and boundary of Warwick Township which he had earlier purchased from John Potts Jr.. In 1834, Daniel Boone built the first cabin in Clifton Township which later became part of Clarksburg when it was organized as a township. In November 1835, while still in Clifton Township, Amos Kendall purchases 640 acres (246 ha) of land east of present-day Main Street between Mechanic Creek and Pilot Mountain Roads for $5 per acre ($/ha). This purchase included parts of present-day Blair County as well as adjacent Putnam County Kendall sold most or all of this land to James Aiken in 1840 for $10 per acre ($/ha). Aiken also acquired 620 acres (248 ha) west of Main Street between Mechanic Creek Road and Pilot Mountain Road for $5 per acre ($/ha). This acquisition included much of present-day Greenbrier County Aiken formed the largest agricultural enterprise west ofthe Appalachian Mountains when he purchase 2154 acres (905 ha) near present day Huntington Airport for $25 peracre ($/ha), making him one of the earliest farmers in this area
