Gun cleaning in Clarksburg, West Virginia has a long and proud history. The town was founded in 1871 by General John J. Pershing and the first gun shop opened in 1872. The Gun and Knife Shop was located on Main Street until it closed in 1929. Clarksburg experienced significant growth during the height of prohibition in the 1920s and 1930s. A number of new bars, restaurants, and nightclubs sprang up around downtown, while other businesses such as hardware stores and lumberyards took advantage of Prohibition-era restrictions on firearms ownership to keep their doors open. After repeal of prohibition in 1933, business slowed down until World War II intervened with a flood of military personnel moving into Clarksburg and demand for firearms increased. With wartime production came more stringent regulations on firearms ownership which led to several closures throughout the 1940s and 1950s. The Gun Shop reopened in 1957 after being closed for three years due to lack of government funding. It would be operated by Mr. & Mrs. John Hargrave from its inception until it closed again in 1969 when they sold it to Tom Sells who kept it running as a antique store before closing it also in 1969). In 1975, the shop was purchased by Cliff Herron who continued operations until he passed away in 2003; his widow continued operations until her death one year later (the last store closure occurred within two months of each other). In 2003, James Slaughter acquired control of the Gun Shop from Cliff Herron's widow; he ran it as an antique dealership until his death four years later (in 2009). After James Slaughter's death, his son-in-law Donny Wahl began managing the store under the name "Donny's Guns." In 2013, Donny Wahl sold the store to Rick Mathers who continues operation as an antique shop today with over 20 years experience running this type of business (and two additional decades spent working at various other retail establishments).

During this time period, Clarksburgh grew rapidly as a result of its close proximity to both England and Philadelphia. In 1786-87, John Clary founded what would become Brooke County based on land he purchased from the Monongahela Nation after being rejected for membership within that tribe's Confederation government. He named his new county after himself – Clarkstown – because he felt it would help him stay top secret about his new territory while still promoting agriculture as one of the primary industries thereabouts. This early success helped spur development throughout much of Brooke County and even into neighboring Mercer County where Clary had initial acreage interests but sold most all holdings by 1809 following his move from Brooke Valley to present-day Wheeling Plaza! As Appalachian culture slowly spread out across broader America during this time period (and with accompanying economic growth), so too did notions about race and ethnicity begin emerging within Appalachia itself; specifically among those directly affected by frontier expansionism: white men seeking access resultingin increased competition for Native American land while simultaneously displacing lower class indigenous populations who were often forced off their homes at gunpoint or worse! The Clarksburg area was first settled by Algonquian-speaking Shawnee in the late eighteenth century. They were displaced in the early nineteenth century by the migrating Scotch-Irish. The town was founded on May 20, 1819, when settlers from Kentucky arrived to claim land east of the Allegheny Mountains. The town was named for General John Cranch, who fought in the Mexican War and later served as a U.S. Senator from Virginia. In 1827, General James K. Polk appointed Colonel George Meade to survey land south of Clarksburg and called it West Virginia; Meade's plan called for a line running due north from Pittsburgh to Brownsville then southeast along the Cumberland River to Clarksburg; but this plan failed to gain approval from Congress. The name "Clarksburg" was finally given to the town on July 15, 1828, when Chancery Court Judge Isaac McCoy assigned it to Claiborne County on behalf of West Virginia Territory.
