This development led to increased traffic and business opportunities for residents, who began using their new street names to distinguish themselves from their surrounding rural areas: Main Street (later renamed Wyoming Avenue), 3rd Avenue (later renamed Market Street), etc. However, during World War II Clarksburg experienced some significant economic decline due to an embargo against war materials imposed by President Franklin D Roosevelt; however, it rebounded following the war with strong economic growth thanks in part to government assistance programs such as those provided through Project HOME (housing development for returning military veterans).
