West Virginia is a state in the Midwestern United States. It is bordered by Ohio to the east, Kentucky to the south and Tennessee to the west. The Appalachian Mountains run through its center and divide it into two halves: the lower half, including Charleston, is in mountainous terrain while the upper half, including Morgantown and Wheeling, is more level. Charleston was founded by English colonists in 1629 as a port on the Ashley River and grew quickly as an agricultural center. By 1825, it had become an important manufacturing town with mills that produced everything from shoes to clothing to cannons. During West Virginia's Civil War (1861-1865), Charleston was one of several places where Confederate soldiers were quartered. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to send his entire army into Lexington County in order to besiege Union General Ulysses S. Grant's headquarters at Fort Pickens. However, before he could arrive, Union forces attacked and drove him out of town. For his part in this battle, Ewell was court-martialed and executed at Fort Delaware on May 3rd 1865 before being buried there within days of his death. The city of Charleston slowly recovered during Reconstruction (1868-1912). After years of economic decline following slavery's abolition in 1877, Charleston experienced a resurgence due in part to its role as a naval base during World War II (1939-1945). The city also became known for its prominent African American citizens who played important roles in both politics and business during this time period. Today much of downtownCharleston remains unchanged since slaves fled into freedomotton plantations here around 1790; however many businesses have moved into newly renovated buildings along Meeting Street between King Street/Broadwalk/College Avenue
