In 1857, a group of men from Charleston, West Virginia started the first gun safe company in the United States. The company was called "Gun Swivels and Lock Co." The business was started by John Waddell and his brother-in-law George Armstrong. The Gun Swivels and Lock Company became quite successful and soon began producing their own firearms safes. The company also began to sell gun revolving stocks which were used to store firearms in multiple positions. With the onset of the American Civil War, the Gun Swivels and Lock Company continued to produce their own firearmssafes for use during this time period. However, they did not take part in battle because their products were not specifically designed for this purpose.

In 1830, the town's first school was opened by teachers John Overstreet and William Welsh. Charleston also began to grow rapidly as a result of its strategic location on the Ohio River and its access to transportation infrastructure. By 1840, Charleston had become one of the most important towns in Brooke County due to its heavy trade with eastern Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1848, Charleston became the capital of West Virginia after becoming an independent state following the American Civil War. During this time, it became known as "The moral center of America." In 1865, when Mississippi seceded from America and formed their own state, West Virginia automatically joined Mississippi because it was part of Louisiana Territory until that state's admission into the Union in 1870. As a result of this connection to Mississippi during Reconstruction Era times period (1868-1877), Charleston emerged as one of the most economically vibrant cities in America during that time period. During World War II, Charlestown played a major role in supporting military efforts within both Europe and North America due to its location on both sides of the continental divide and its importance for rail transport between those regions. Additionally, Charlestown served as headquarters for various United States Army units during World War II including First Lieutenant General George Armstrong Custer's command staff which resided at 3rd Infantry Division Headquarters Building from 1942-1945 while also providing living quarters for Ulysses S Grant's staff when they were stationed at Fort Donelson near ChattanoogaTennessee from 1943-1945; these troops would later be relocated back to Fort Donelson after Custer's death.. Today there are few remaining authentic businesses dating back more than 100 years such as James Fenton’s Bootblack Shop which still stands today on Meeting Street SW across from Third Ward Elementary School; or Mr & Mrs Oldenburg’s grocery store which closed down around 1970 but is still standing next door to Seventh Ward Middle School although some damage has been done over time; either way it’s an interesting reminder about how everyday life used to be here before all this recent development occured!

In 1861, Confederate forces besieged and captured the city, resulting in an important turning point in West Virginia's history. However, economic stagnation led to social recession and increasing poverty in the city during the late 19th century. The city experienced significant population growth during Reconstruction, reaching its peak of around 100,000 residents in 1900. However, following West Virginia's admission to statehood in 1901, African Americans were increasingly relegated to lower-level jobs and housing opportunities within the city limits. During World War II the city experienced increased military activity due to its strategic location on both sides of the Potomac River. As a result of this activity, Charlestown became one of the most bombed cities in World War II with extensive damage suffered by buildings and infrastructure. After 1945 Charlestown declined significantly as new development replaced old brick homes with modern structures; however, some abandoned properties have been renovated into small businesses or apartment complexes."
