At Halleck Creek Bridge, Ewell's forces clashed with Grant's much larger force under General Thomas Jarratt; both sides suffered heavy losses but ultimately withdrew without achieving their goals. When Charleston became the capital of West Virginia in 1861 following its secession from the Union, it had only 10 residents; by 1865 it had grown to more than 120! The city continued to grow rapidly during the American Civil War; by 1870 it had reached 350 residents! In 1865 Confederate Major General Pemberton surrendered at Appomattox Court House after his army was destroyed by Union troops marching through Charleston under General Ulysses S. Grant; this event marked one end of slavery in West Virginia and ended Reconstruction there permanently! During Reconstruction period many buildings within downtown Charleston were used as housing for black people which continued until recent years when they have been torn down or moved out due to code violations
