This company arrived on January 3,1793 with 16 slaves under their command including Captain John Ligonier who commanded them while they traveled through what is now Maryland and Pennsylvania until they reached Ohio where they disembarked at Baltimore on February 2nd! In 1802-1803 President Thomas Jefferson ordered federal troops stationed along the Potomac River valley to protect American settlers from Indian attacks The town became known as Englishtown after an Englishman by the name of Crosby bought land here in 1802 In 1814-1815 Confederate forces burned down much of Englishtown because it supported Union efforts during the American Civil War After Reconstruction8 years elapsed before African Americans regained full legal rights here Today there are more than 100 black families living here with many businesses active and contributing to local economies . There are also over 50 churches located throughout downtown Charleston with numerous services offered year round . In addition to its rich cultural history , Charleston has also become an important educational center for West Virginians with several high schools making it one stop for students seeking education opportunities both locally and statewide
