After Confederate forces were routed at Antietam Creek on September 17, 1861, General Bragg returned to Winchester and found that Charlestown had not been destroyed as he had feared: many of its residents decided to remain and began reconstruction efforts here. By 1865, Charlestown had become a thriving commercial center with mills and businesses such as stores, hotels, churches and schools dotting every block. After Union troops marched into town on May 12th 1865 during their march towards Appomattox Court House following Richmond's surrender that ended the Civil War (the last major battle fought in Virginia), most of Charlestown's businesses burned down or were looted by Union troops who took whatever they could find without looting any homes or property. That day marks one pivotal moment in Charleston's history: although much damage did occur - including over 1/3 million dollars worth of property loss - few if any people were arrested or prosecuted for this act of vandalism; instead most people chose to go about their lives as usual until Reconstruction began more than two decades later when memories of that event faded away among most Americansjointly with Confederate nostalgia
