Bluefield is a small town in Wyandotte County, West Virginia. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wyandotte County. Bluefield was founded by settlers in 1792 and incorporated as a city on November 3, 1871. It became a town on February 14, 1907. The name "Bluefield" is derived from Court House Hill which overlooks the town site and was once used for military purposes. The creation of Wyandotte County by act of Congress in 1837 brought new life to Bluefield as the new county seat with an influx of settlers from Kentucky and Ohio. The first post office opened in 1792 and until 1870 it served only Wyandotte County residents. On November 3, 1871, Bluefield became one of the original counties in West Virginia when it was formed from parts of Hardee and Washington Counties. At that time there were just six towns in WV: Harrisonburg (founded 1819), Clarksburg (founded 1821), New Market (founded 1840), Winchester (founded 1841), Parkersburg (founded 1798), Wilkes-Barre (established 1800) while bluefields stretched across all but two of those seven counties! By 1907 there were 16 towns in WV: 11 located within Hardee, 6 located within Washington, 4 within Campbell Rusk, 2 located within McDowell Courthouse territory east of Loudoun County line and 1 each inside Duell & Logan Counties! In 1957 bluefields extended into today’s Mingo & Fayette Counties; however its namesake still dominates most areas having populations over 10K with over half that number living outside neighboring towns!
