Bluefield, West Virginia is a town located in Kanawha County, West Virginia. The population was 10,890 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the six unincorporated communities in Kanawha County and the only one to be founded after the statehood of West Virginia. Bluefield was platted on February 14, 1837 by John Wistar and James Gentry. The name "Bluefield" is derived from blue hills which can be seen from most of the town. The first post office in Bluefield opened on July 1, 1838. The current post office building was built in 1907 and replaced an earlier structure that was destroyed by fire on December 9, 1906. At its peak during World War II, Bluefield had a population of over 20,000 people. However, since then it has declined somewhat with the advent of highway travel and other economic factors. Despite this decline however, Bluefield still remains a popular community for residents located within its boundaries due to its tight-knit community spirit and easy access to services provided by local businesses and government entities such as schools and libraries
The first white settler in what is now West Virginia was James Logan in 1776. He and his family moved from Virginia to the area that is now Bluefield County, West Virginia, in the early 1800s. The first permanent white settlement in what is now Bluefield County was built by John McKnight in 1819.
