Bluefield is a town in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,818 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Kanawha County. The first permanent settler in what is now Bluefield was James Hance in 1786. The community was named for Captain John Bluefield who led an expedition against the Cherokee in 1814. At that time Kanawha County consisted only of unincorporated areas and James Hance had no power to name a county seat. He petitioned Congress for the creation of Kanawha County and received approval on July 14, 1819. He named his settlement after himself, while still living on Roanoke Island off North Carolina's coast. Governor John Cranch designated Bluefield as the new county seat on November 3, 1820 following its incorporation into Kanawha County. In 1830, when all but one colony in Virginia were destroyed by fire, Blue Hill Colony (now Roanoke) relocated to what is now Wiseburg and founded another town called Wiseboro within Bluefields boundaries; however this town never achieved significant growth and ceased to exist when it merged with Hanover Township on December 10th, 1907 under then-Kanawha County Superintendent Atherton Ladds III (). construction of the Bypass Road started during World War II as part of Project Midway which connected Morgantown with Charleston by way of Mingo Valley via Bridgeport Gap before continuing east to Wheeling and Wauseon Junction; however due to wartime restrictions much of this road was eliminated between 1945-1946 when it became part of Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard . The old post office building located at 525 Main Street has been moved from its original location two blocks south across Marshall Avenue from where it served as a courthouse until 1967 when it burned down making it possible for Greenbrier Resort Hotel located across Marshall Avenue from where the old post office once stood also to be built without any damage done.; however despite moving again - this time using heavy machinery - they could not save either property! In addition Partisan limitations caused most mining operations outside Morgantown to stop starting until after 1969 although some continued through 1975 because there were no other qualified operators available at that time; including many small minesbelieved to have been abandoned or have simply stopped working altogether over time because their owners could not afford new equipment or insurance Cedar Mountain Coal Company closed its doors permanently effective October 1st 1959 leaving many people out of work particularly those associated with production and transportation facilities near Morgantown).
