Bluefield is a small town in Webster County, West Virginia. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Bluefield is located on the Ohio River and is part of the Wheeling-Erie Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies just upstream of the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. The first white people to live in what is now Bluefield were brought over by Andrew Jackson during his Missouri Expedition in 1836. They named their new town for General John Custer, who had been killed at Battle of Little Bighorn two years earlier. In 1838, a group of East Tennessee Presbyterians founded a religious school here and named it for Scottish missionary Rev. James Buchanan Johnston (1792-1868). The community did not have any churches until after World War II when United Methodist missionaries arrived and started building them here. Bluefield became an incorporated village on December 14, 1907. The name “Bluefields” was first used by postmaster John Witherspoon to designate a subdivision that he developed east of the original village limits on Route 611 near present day intersection of State Road 421 and North Main Street (now known as Main Street West). On July 2, 1909, incorporation as an independent township was granted by county court following a petition filed by Witherspoon with instructions to be ratified by referendum before becoming operative effective January 1, 1910 . On November 5th 1920 residents voted 10-2 in favor of annexing neighboring Ephrata Township due to lack of suitable land within Bluefields boundaries for church or other purposes but all such annexation requests were denied because there was no vote on whether or not to become an independent city according to then current rules set forth by then County Court Clerk Lloyd Patey . This decision effectively ended Greeneville's bid for independence from Bluefields limits as that boundary would have included most if not all properties located between Broadway Avenue/SR 421 (now US 22) north and SR 422 south including both Ephrata Township property annexed into Bluefields limits since 1920 while Greeneville lay adjacent to those boundaries east side only extending about two blocks south along US 22 from its southern terminus which derived from Ephrata Township line approximately one half mile west from present day I-64 exit number 4A & 5A
