Bluefield, West Virginia was founded in 1782 by George Washington and his family. The city is home to the Bluefield Armory, which is the oldest armory in the United States. The armory was used as a training ground for American military forces during the Revolutionary War. In 1847, President James K. Polk called on Bluefield residents to contribute $1,000 to help fund his wagon road project. Today, the armory is open to the public and hosts events such as exhibitions and demonstrations of firearms techniques.

In 1907, Bluefield became the first community in what is now Mingo County to annex neighboring Randolph County.
In 1781, the area that is now Bluefield was part of Mingo County. In 1801, it became part of Jefferson County. In 1819, it became a county seat and remained so until 1865. The population of the county in 1860 was 9,362.
