By 1880, there were over fifty businesses located in Bluefield with a population of over 1,500 people! In 1903, when Greenbrier National Park was created within Mingo County boundaries by President William McKinley as part of New Deal reforms to improve public education throughout America, Bluefield became one of several towns within that park which did not have their own government until 1934! During World War II, local production for munitions helped support combat efforts throughout much of America; however, significant portions of Bluefields downtown were destroyed bybombing on September 15th 1945 as part of Japan's atomic bombing campaign against U.S.-occupied Japan!
