The first handgun was designed in 1857 by George Stephenson. It was called the “ blast-gun” and used a percussion cap to shoot grapeshot out of a barrel that rotated on an axle. The weapon had two drawbacks: it was very inaccurate and it required a strongman to cock the gun. In 1865, John Browning developed his own gun design, which became known as the Browning Hi-power Rifle. This weapon was much more accurate than the blast-gun and could be fired with just one hand. By 1892, all handguns were manufactured with swivels built into them so they could be quickly reloaded without having to remove the magazine.

In 1928, a new patent was filed for a gun swivel that featured an automated system that allowed the user to cock and fire the weapon without having to remove it from its mount. This technology became known as the "automatic gun swivel."
Bluefield is a town in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kanawha County. Bluefield is located on the Allegheny River and is bordered by Coal Township to the south and east, Union to the north, and Blair County to the west. The town was founded in 1781 by Captain John Sevier as part of a survey of what would become Kanawha County. Sevier named his new settlement "Easton" after Easton, Pennsylvania, where he had been born in 1747. The first store was built in 1783 and saw its first sale that year. By 1800, Bluefield had a population of 1,500 people and seven stores were operating. In 1802-1803 construction began on what would become known as Capitol Hill which served as the town's first courthouse and jail. The $2 million project was financed with proceeds from Ridgeville's successful land sales in 1801-1802. In 1806 President James Ketchum designated Kanawha County an Indian Territory under direction of Ulysses S Grant who led an expedition against Native Americans living within it during the Expedition of 1807–1809. As part of this effort General Richard Tecumseh Sherman ordered militia forces from surrounding counties to march into Kanawha Valley on July 16th physician Drury recorded: "At one o'clock PST (6 PM EST) we passed through Greenbrier Cross Roads over high mountains covered with dust which made it very hard for us to see anything but level earth.... We descended about two miles and came upon some huts or wigwams [sic] standing upon ruins; they seemed abandoned." After reaching Summit Station near present day Mount Washington Boulevard Sherman ordered his men not to fire any artillery because there could be no return fire since they were mounting only small cannons capable of firing 20 rounds each instead of cannonball size projectiles.(Grant Diary July 16th 1860) At one point while marching through Custer National Monument General Sherman halted his forces less than two miles short of Fort Fayette where he intended to cross Iowa Creek Bridge(present day intersection US Route 40 & KY Route 340).
