Bluefield is a town in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 8,363 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the five boroughs in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and it borders Squirrel Hill to the south and Oakland to the north. The first settler in what is now Bluefield was James Whitehead in 1792. The community was platted as part of a grant from Lord Fairfax to John Sevier on December 15, 1802. Settlement began by Italians and German Americans who founded a small village called Coccodrillo on February 10, 1803 near present-day Woolworth Avenue and Market Street. A post office called Bluefield was established in 1806, but no mail reached it until November 1, 1809 when an order arrived from Philadelphia allowing mail service between that city and Kanawha County "on account of increasing occurrences of political sedition." The town's founder (and namesake) Elijah McCoy donated land for a courthouse which was built in 1870. In 1872 Confederate General Robert Ewell invested $5200 into a new cotton gin enterprise here that would become one of West Virginia's largest employers—he became known as "The Father of Greeneville" because much of his production went to help support Greene County during the American Civil War (1861- 1865). In 1886 McCoy donated land for Bluefield High School which opened for classes on September 12th that year. In 1899 WV Statehood ceremonies were held at Bowman Field where President William McKinley delivered his inaugural address flanked by Governor George Norris and Senators Borah Woodbury and Donnee McClintock with Mrs Sarah Ellis leading children across the field after being led by First Lady Julia Taft Martin; note: this event took place before Black History Month had been recognized officially by Congress

In 1881, two years after West Virginia became a state, the legislature authorized construction of a university in Bluefield. President James Buchanan donated $10,000 to help fund the school's establishment. The first students entered the university on September 14, 1881. A decade later, on October 1, 1890, West Virginia University opened its doors with 587 students and 22 faculty members. Today, WVU is one of America's leading universities with an enrollment of over 25,,000 undergraduate and graduate students from all 50 states and more than 60 countries! WVU faculty have received numerous awards including six Nobel Prizes (including one shared with Princeton University). The town of Bluefield was founded in 1792 by surveyors working for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The first post office was established in 1801, and the town's first courthouse was built in 1805. Bluefield became a city in 1907. In 1920, the United States Post Office moved from nearby Wheeling to Bluefield, and the name changed to Bluefield-Wahandotte Borough. The borough was dissolved in 1973, but its former boundaries are still used as part of the current City of Bluefield.
