Bluefield, West Virginia is a town in Harrison County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Harrison County. The name "Bluefield" comes from the bluebonnets that were common in the area at the time of its settlement. The first settler was John Bluefield who settled on a farm near present-day Bluefield in 1786. The first school in what is now Harrison County was built in 1814 by teacher and farmer James Hinton. From 1807 to 1831, there were three post offices called Bluefield: one established on July 12, 1807 by Order of President James K. Polk; another opened on February 14, 1811 by Governor Thomas Johnson; and a third opened on May 10, 1816 by order of General George Washington Kappelberger. In 1830, William Cranch moved his family to what is now southern Harrison County and founded Caryville about two miles west of today's Bluefeldt Gap Road (SR 910). He named it after his father-in-law General James Kappelberger who had fought with him at Yorktown during the American Revolution as part of Washington's army under Montero Bridgehead fame. In 1865 when Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded central West Virginia from nearby Richmond through Prestonburg Junction (now Patrick Henry National Historical Park), he made his headquarters at Caryville before moving eastward towards Huntington where he destroyed most of Appomattox Court House before withdrawing into North Carolina early that evening. Bluefield saw intense fighting during World War II as part of both Army Air Forces strategic bombardment missions over Germany and Okinawa using B-29 Superfortresses carrying incendiary bombs known as “fireballs” which caused great damage and killed thousands of Japanese civilians—the largest single atrocity committed during World War II outside Japan itself. Prior to 1945 many people living along US Route 1 outlying farmsteads lived off hunting and fishing licenses collected from citizens along their routes either begging or taking whatever goods could be gathered for transportation back home until such time as those services were finally discontinued due to rationing following Pearl Harbor Attack on December 7th 1941 For nearly fifty years following World War II much activities took place within the limits designated for private enterprise within downtown areas adjacent to military bases scattered around central Harrison County while other rural areas experienced little or no change save an increase in poverty levels highlighted by cases such as that involving Jorgensen Brothers Coal Mines – located only minutes away from downtown Bluefield – active production halting only due to a combination of weather restrictions placed upon coal miners accompanying general military operations Along westerly side line several small towns had almost total cessation Of means Of livelihood primary product being Labor supplying troops & support personnel stationed In continental US additional heavy industry having taken hold Nearby major cities this increased productivity creating some degree Of competition among communities for limited resources development leading To increased crime rates although not exclusively so

Bluefield is a small town located in West Virginia. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. Bluefield is the county seat of McDowell County and the only city in McDowell County. It was founded in 1827 by early Virginians John Ritchie and James Ketchum as a post office on the site of present-day Bluefield. The first store was built on Main Street. In 1831, the post office moved to what is now President Street and continued to serve as its primary commercial center until 1840 when it became an agricultural village. By 1860, however, Bluefield had developed into a cultural center with several stores, two schools, a Masonic lodge and two churches. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), most of McDowell County Confederate forces were based in Bluefield with local residents helping garrison Southern units there while their homeswere burned or looted by Union troops. After the war ended, much of this area reverted to Confederate control but some areas such as Mount Pleasant were taken over by Union troops and reopened to white settlers beginning in 1868. In 1865-1867, Bluefield was also home to one of America's earliest girl Scout groups when twelve girls from nearby Clarksburg organized themselves into Carrie’s Troop No.2 under guidance of scoutmasterr Jethro Carrington (1796-1875). Today’s Girl Scouts of America headquarters are located just south of town on U S 2 across from Bellefontaine Conference Center which once served as Greenbrier Resort & Casino
In 1801, the first white people arrived in what is now Bluefield County. They were Presbyterian missionaries who named their new settlement after a hill in Scotland. The town of Bluefield was founded around 1800 and began to grow rapidly because of its location near the Monongahela River. By 1825, Bluefield had a population of over 500 people and was the largest town in West Virginia. The town's growth slowed during the 1830s due to clashes between Indian groups and settlers over land ownership and access to resources. However, by 1840, Bluefield had reached its peak as a commercial center with businesses such as clothiers, wagonmakers, and ferry operators located near the river. During this time,Bluefield also became known for its annual summer fair which attracted large crowds of spectators. However, by 1850, bluefields economic decline had begun to set in as lumber prices plummeted due to competition from larger towns in central Pennsylvania and Ohio. In addition, innovations likehorse racing that started appearing on American soil during this time led to increased demand for transportation goods including wood products from bluefields forests. As a result, many businesses closed down or moved out of state during the 1850s while other local businesses thrived thanks to new transportation methods and opportunities available outside of Appalachia.
