Bluefield is a town in Logan County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Logan County. The first permanent settler in Bluefield was Samuel Armstrong in 1811. He and his family built a cabin on the west side of what is now Second Street. Armstrong sold the cabin to John White in 1815 for $5 per acre (0.40 acres). The original name for this site was "Armstrong's Station" because Samuel Armstrong owned all of the land within sight of it. In 1819, Isaac Norris bought Armstrong's Cabin from John White and renamed it "Norris'. Norris developed Orange Run which he named after his brother-in-law William Norris who had helped him purchase the land from white farmers north of where Bluefield now stands. In 1830, when Union troops burned Norfolk's Courthouse during their occupation of West Virginia, bluefields were ravaged by fire as flames swept through whole neighborhoods including Norris' own home where he raised nine children and buried five brothers and sisters who died in the fire. The first post office was established at Norris' Cabin on July 10, 1830; it continued under that name until May 1, 1865 when it changed to Bluefield due to confusion with nearby Brownstown which also functioned as a post office at that time. Bluefield became an incorporated town on December 13, 1907; its motto was "Eternal vigilance." By 1908 there were only 399 residents living in what is today known as Greeneville Township (the eastern edge of Logan County) while Bluefield’s population had swollen to 710 making it one of America’s largest towns by 1910 with 9 churches and 12 schools. The growth continued until World War I when taxes plummeted due to agricultural depression and many small businesses closed doors because they could not compete with larger millsproducing munitions or food products like cotton or lumber. One result was a large number of bluefields becoming abandoned due to lack of available housing or easy access to transportation so people turned their attention towards farming or hunting instead Checkerburgh Springs sawmill Which still operates today providing local employment although most employees are nonresidential

After World War II, Bluefield experienced rapid growth as an industrial city, but its economy has since declined. Today, Bluefield is an agricultural town with a population of about 2,500 people. The history of Bluefield is closely intertwined with that of nearby Wheeling, which was also founded in 1786 and became one of the most important coalmining communities in America.
In 1814, the area now known as Bluefield was part of Breathitt County. In 1828, it became part of Jackson County. On February 14, 1861, it became one of the six counties in West Virginia that seceded from the United States to form the Confederate States of America.
