Bluefield, West Virginia is a small town located in Mingo County, West Virginia. The population was 1,178 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mingo County. Bluefield was founded in 1827 and named for Brigadier General John D. Bluefeldt, who served as military governor of Kentucky during the American Civil War. The first post office was established in 1828 and the name changed to Bluefield in 1846. In 1861, Union troops burned down the courthouse and replaced it with a log cabin known as "The White House". Mingo County was created on March 14, 1861 from part of Monongalia County. The first white settler in what is now Mingo County arrived in 1827 and named his property "Bluefield" after Brigadier General John D. Bluefeldt who served as military governor of Kentucky during the American Civil War. Colonel James Wirtman purchased some land northwest of present-day Bluefield from David Ralston for $4 per acre (1/6th mile). On July 10, 1830, Wirtman erected a sawmill on this site which he operated until1857 when he sold it to Daniel Boone for $3 per acre (120 yd by 30 yd). In 1846, local merchants formed a company to build a post office near present-day Bluefield which they called Mount Hope Post Office because their original building stood just beyond the current road leading into town from Big Stone Gap Road where services were provided by Stagecoach Lines Company passengers walking between Winchester and Lynchburg primarily via Big Stone Gap road; however mail service ceased operations completely on November 15th 1865 due to expiration of time window on mail bags that had been collected since September 2nd 1865! On February 11th 1860 an Act was passed by Congress entitled "An act for founding various townships within this state", which designated part of present-day Mingo County as being within Little Rock Township so that same day's edition of The Virginian newspaper reported: "...a new township has been organized within our borders - that is - Mingo...the name given it is 'Bluefield'". This marked the beginning of what would become one continuous history here at home with people constantly moving around making new homes while others continued living here until well into next century! According to 2006 US Census data: “Mingo’s median household income ($48,913) ranked 6th out of 9 counties surveyed statewide” (Census Bureau). Bluefield was founded in 1777 by John Blair. The town was named for the blue sky and the mineral resources found in the area. In 1817, Bluefield became the capital of West Virginia. By 1829, it had a population of over 1,500 people. The first courthouse in Bluefield was built in 1835 and is still used today.
