The town had been founded by John Sevier and Daniel Boone in 1777 as a small frontier settlement on the Susquehanna River. When Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, Bluefield became part of West Virginia and its capital became Wheeling. In 1902, Bluefield voters adopted a city charter that made it one of the first cities in America to have an effective police force. In 1951, Bluefield incorporated as an independent city and has since grown into one of the most urbanized areas in West Virginia. The city is located just outside of Wheeling on West Virginia Route 12 and has a population of over 100,000 people today. Bluefield history begins with Captain John Sevier who settled there in 1777 after arriving from England with his family. Sevier developed what is now known as Main Street which ran between present-day State Road 508 (now called Boulevard) east to Wabash Avenue (now York Road), and Wabash Avenue northeast to where Interstate 81 meets US 25 today. He also built what is now called Sevier Park which still stands today across from Main Street near where he first set up shop. This park served as an early community center for residents and eventually became home to both public schools and a jail before being taken over by the county government in 1836 when it merged with Harrisonburg into Gillespie County. From here on out, until 1830 when Greeneville split off from Gillespie County, all future settlements within present-day Bluefield were through alliances or treaties with neighboring counties - including Harrisonburg which was then part of Mingo County! The first major development at what is now Redstone Arsenal occurred during this time period when General James Ketchum purchased 640 acres (2 km²) adjacent to what are now Redstone Arsenal Cemetery for $50 per acre ($4 million total) It was during this time period that Ketchum began developing what would become known as Redstone Arsenal Resort which included several miles (km²) of open land along river banks near where Potomac Creek flows into Shenandoah River today! Over time various other industries have been established at or around these sites such as ammunition production during World War II; research facilities like plutonium production at Oak Ridge National Laboratory; office space for defense contractors like Northrop Grumman; daycare centers for military families stationed nearby; and more! Today many enjoy enjoying nature activities such as fishing or boating available right next door at Redstone Arsenal! The late 1800s saw a significant growth trend for bluefields throughout Appalachia due to increased demand for coal products resulting from improved transportation methods thanks to railroads connecting different parts of the country! Priorities shifted towards increasing steel production due to increased American output following Taft’s presidency – this led Steel Valley Corporation (SVC), predecessor company/tycoon Don Murray’s newly formed aluminum industry group led by Murray & Company president Alcoa chairman Jock Whitney Sr., establish plants at Monongalia Furnace southwest of town renamed Goodyear Coal & Aluminum Works starting operations on July 1st 1901!! Thereafter goodyear mined anthracite coal downwind past Middletown while Goodyear furnace processes ore brought downriver including some used by A&P grocery store founder Grocery Outlet Incorporated Ravenswood process plant owned by Bethlehem Steel Corporation) also located west side original rolling mill site Dogpatch mine producing black powder munitions thru 1870's
The first white people in Bluefield were the Latter Day Saints who arrived in 1819. The town was founded by James K. Polk in 1837, and it became a county seat in 1861. It was renamed Bluefield after General Robert E. Lee during the American Civil War.
