Beckley, West Virginia is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of Mingo County's five towns and is located on the Allegheny River. The first permanent settler in Beckley was George Wittell who built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in 1827. He and his wife were the first to live there and are buried in Pioneer Cemetery. In 1830, John Carpenter set up a gristmill on Big Creek just east of town. By 1840, several other settlers had established businesses in Beckley including David Dallimore who ran a store and post office from his home until 1862, Hiram Hovey who operated a millinery business from 1851-1860 and Isaac Chappell who raised chickens for eggs until he bought an interest in the flour mills run by David Dallimore two years later. In 1861, Beckley became part of Mingo County when it was created from parts of Butler and McDowell Counties. The county courthouse was moved to Beckley from its original location near Winchester in 1868. The first newspaper published in Beckley was the "Mingo Gazette" which started publication on October 15th, 1867. The present day downtown area around Main Street was developed as a result of development during the early 21st century by entrepreneur/developer Marvin Koppenkamp with help from local government officials including Mayor Rick Sells and Town Manager Don Cutts among others involved with various aspects of downtown redevelopment since 2006 when Koppenkamp purchased property bordered by Sells Boulevard on one side and Second Avenue NW on the other across Second Street NE from First National Bank before moving into full occupancy about two years ago as DowntownBeckLEY Incorporation Incorporating all adjoining properties situated hereinon within this community under one roof were formed effective immediately thereafter pursuant to said purchase agreement dated January 17th , 2007 between DowntownBeckLEY Incorporation (DowntownbeckLEY) dba Urban Development Group LLC (/ 1636 South 2nd Ave., Suite 400 Harrisonburg VA 22401) - MayorRickSells (R- 3rd Ward) - Town ManagerDonCutts (D- 5th Ward) - MarvinKoppenkamp
