Beckley is a town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,876 at the 2010 census. Beckley is located in Mingo County. It is part of the Wheeling–Steubenville, WV-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first established in 1827 as a small community on the southern edge of Mingo County. By 1835, it had grown to include a school and store. In 1859, Beckley became the seat of Mingo County after it was split from Logan County. In 1865, when Logan County was eliminated and all its land reassigned to Mingo County, Beckley became the new county seat. The post office remained in operation until 1954. In 1902, a group of businessmen formed the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in response to Governor John D.[1] Kelley's attempt to Small Business Administrator legislation that would have favored larger businesses over smaller ones. The AFL recruited local members and opened an organization shop in Beckley for local residents to join its ranks. In 1908, when Kelley resigned his position as governor and returned to his home state of Ohio after being appointed by President Roosevelt as Secretary of Commerce, he gave Beckley's AFL hallmarks—a red flag with green letters spelling "WV" at one end and an "A" for American Association with blue lettering at the other—to show his support for its cause while he resided there[2]. Throughout most of World War I,[3], morale among many Appalachian communities was low due largely to lack of opportunity[4]; however during wartime demand for goods exported from Appalachia increased dramatically because steel production soared across much of America[5]. Later that same year (1916), when war ended and newly elected President Woodrow Wilson announced plans for a New Deal,[6] representatives from Appalachian coal mining communities met with him at Knoxville near Chattanooga in order to plead their case for government assistance; these efforts led eventually to passage by Congress on December 3rd,[7] providing $15 million dollars towards building housing projects throughout Appalachia consistent with Wilson's plan for regional development.[8] Due primarily to technological advancements over this time period such as TV remote control devices,[9][10] radio broadcasting,[11][12][13][14][15] automobiles[16], refrigerators[17], microwaves[18],[19],[20], air conditioning units[21],[22]), heavy industry has decreased substantially or completely disappeared from Appalachia since World War II due largely either To changes associated with economic globalization or suburbanization within Appalachia itself: As production moves away from traditional rural areas into more centralized facilities outside valley regions jobs are available closer-in cities which can provide good paying jobs but also tend be very polluted/smoggy compared traditional mining/industrial towns where living quarters are close together shared around open fires all day long
Beckley was founded in 1786 by Christopher Beckley, a man who came from England. The town is named after Christopher and his wife Rebecca. The first post office was established in 1837. In 1911, the town council passed an ordinance establishing a fire department. The first fire department building was built in 1917.
