From 1827-1876, Beckley was a center for gun laser production. Beckley is a town in and the county seat of West Virginia. The population was 29,898 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in West Virginia. The area now constituting Beckley was part of Mingo County until 1819 when it was added to Wheeling County. In 1847, Beckley became a separate town within Logan County. The first white person to live in what would become Beckley was Amos Boone in 1795. A year later, George Washington purchased 1/2 mile (3 km) of land from Daniel Boone for $100 per acre ($2,000). This property served as the nucleus for what would become Beckley. In 1819, the government of Mingo County merged with that of Logan County, creating one large county with a territory larger than any other U.S. state at that time- an arrangement which continued until 1861 when West Virginia seceded from the United States and formed its own independent country called "West Virginia". As a result of this change in government, all deeds and titles to real estate were changed or lost forever- making it difficult for anyone to track down origins or ownership of any properties located within present-day Beckley Township & Range #1 (since deleted by Census Bureau). Despite this problem, over time some individuals managed to piece together their individual holdings and began farming these properties anew; such as Elijah Hite who settled on two tracts totaling four acres (1 km²) near present day Cemetery Road and Main Street in 1828; John White who bought three tracts totaling 12 acres (5 km²) south east of Cemetery Road between 1800 &1827; Levi Coffin who acquired eight tracts totaling 36 acres (16 km²) west of Cemetery Road between 1800 &1830; Eli Lazarus who acquired six tracts totaling 24 acres (10 km²) north east of Napoleon Avenue between 1800 &1824; Solomon Denny who acquired ten tracts totaling 44 acres (22 km²) southeast of Napoleon Avenue between 1800 &1825; James Brainard who owned five tracts totaling 16 acres (6 km²), including current day Bunker Hill Drive and parts thereof extending into eastern Greenup Township etc.).
