Beckley is a town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. Beckley is part of the Wheeling–Beckley, WV-OH-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The zip code for Beckley is 18202. The first Europeans to encounter what is now Beckley were French traders in 1764 when they passed through the area on their way to trade with the Shawnees. For many years it lay within Indian Territory and was known as "Thorny Hill." In 1792 George Washington visited Thorny Hill while he was exploring the area west of Pittsburgh and named it after himself because of its high tree cover near Thorny Hills mountain peak. In 1830, surveyor James Ketchum began developing land around what is now Beckley Center mall which later became part of Beckley Township. He named his development Centreville after Thomas Paine's pamphlet Common Sense from 1789 that urged people to unite against British tyranny and support American independence. In 1831 David Gist bought some land east of present day Beckleyshire Road from John Denton for $100-$300 which he used for farming until 1870 when he built a small log cabin near present day Gist Prairie Road as his winter home. From here he started trading goods along Route 22 between Clarksburg and Wheeling and also traffic on M&O Railroad providing access to points farther down the Ohio River Valley than Clarksburg orWheeling could reach by boat or wagon transport only during summer months when there were no floods in the valley so goods could be shipped upriver all year round including during springtime when navigation was difficult due to low water levels in rivers upstream! "Gist Prairie Road" served as an early form of trucking route connecting Wheeling with various points east and west of Clarksburg where goods were unloaded onto flatcars, wagons or handcarts before being transported by riverboat downriver to larger towns like Huntington before being sold off piecemeal throughout western Pennsylvania and Maryland until 1924 when railroads replaced barges as transportation methods across US Rivers!!! "David Gist" (1812-1890) was one of first farmers in this area who took advantage of new technology available at that time including telephone lines which allowed him direct communication with family back home in Missouri!!"

In 1886, a post office was established in Beckley and by 1890, it had become an important center for mail transportation between West Virginia and Kentucky.
