Beckley is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,552 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mingo County. The first permanent settler in Beckley was John White in 1819. In 1824, George Washington Carver founded a plantation here and named it after himself. A post office called Beckley was established in 1828, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1840, General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his army from Kentucky to Beckley to fight against Mexican forces under Santa Anna. The Battle of Concord occurred here on October 16 that year, resulting in the death of over 100 American soldiers and three Mexicans. Forrest's cavalry camped outside of town for two days before withdrawing back into Kentucky without engaging the local militias assembled there to try and protect the townspeople (and their livestock). Hugh Mercer built a large estate near what is now downtown Beckley in 1845-46 after purchasing 600 acres (2 km²) southeast of town from George Waddell Doddridge. In 1865–1866 he laid out an all-black township named for him east of town on land purchased from Dickinson Randolph & Company which had been donated by his father-in-law Rufus King Kendall Sr.. This community became known as "Mercer's Town". He also developed a small coal mine west of town which produced coal until 1903 when it closed due to exhaustion; this mine has since been preserved as part of the Beckley Coal Historic District (). Beginning with President Ulysses S. Grant's visit to Beckley on July 31st 1865 during his extended tour through Unionist-led West Virginia counties – one week prior to Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation – public celebration took place throughout much of southwestern West Virginia centered around Kingston Institute located just northeast of town limits; this event included music performances by performers associated with Kingston Institute such as former slaves Fanny Beal and Custer Hudson plus local dignitaries including Mayor Jno Waddell Ruffalo and Alderman James Meeks among others; this program culminated with an open air dinner at institute sponsored by Ruffalo that featured six courses including roast beef enchiladas prepared by Beal who later died following surgery while recuperating at home.)
