Beckley is a small town in West Virginia. The population was 1,351 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mingo County and the largest community in Mingo County by land area. Beckley is located on the southern border of Mingo County and is bordered to the east by Greene County and to the west by Brooke County. The town was established in 1827, when it was part of Fayette Township. The first settler in Beckley was John Beckles, who arrived in 1827 and built a cabin on what is now State Route 12. In 1830, Isaac Pond settled in Beckley, followed by Benjamin Smith two years later. By 1840, there were twelve families living in Beckley. In 1851, Heman Crouch settled near present-day Interstate 77 and began raising cattle for market; he became one of the early investors in Beckley. By 1860, there were twenty-eight families living hereabouts. In 1865, Drury Crouch opened a general store here which continued until 1886 when it closed because of lack of business opportunities outside of Mingo County dining rooms at that time. A post office called "Beckley" was established February 10th, 1865 (one day after Fayette) with Prentice Dickinson as its first mailer In 1887/88 Capt E S Morse set up a sawmill here which produced lumber for local buildings until 1918 when it stopped due to World War I restrictions on mills operating outside America's warring countries A new mill started operationsin 1919 but ceased production due to fire in 1922 The only remaining structure from those days is an old blacksmith shop dating back to 1916 which still stands today next door to White Hall School

Beckley was founded in 1858 by Solomon Beckley and his wife, Sarah. Beckley became a small town after the Civil War when most of the men went off to fight. The town prospered because of its natural resources and its close proximity to Morgantown. The Beckleys were very active in local politics and their home was used as a meeting place for the West Virginia General Assembly from 1867 until 1870. They also served on the School District Board from 1865-1868. In 1875, they bought land east of Beckley and built a new home there called "Belle View". In 1896, Solomon's son, Franklin H. Beckley Jr., became mayor of Beckley after serving two terms as councilman. He also served as president of the Borough Council from 1898-1902 and as chairman of the Planning Commission from 1912-1920. After Franklin's death in 1925, his widow continued to serve on the Council until her retirement in 1933. She then lived at "Belle View" until her death in 1945.
