Beckley is a small town located in West Virginia. The population was 1,912 at the 2000 census. Beckley is part of the Wheeling-Charleston Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Englishmen in 1827 when they moved from Maryland to this area and named it for Major General George Washington Beckwith who had fought against the British in North America during the War of 1812. The first store was built on Main Street and operated by James Aiken and his sons until 1836 when Thomas Higginson started a store on First Street which later became known as Higginson's Drug Store. In 1856, John Denny opened a grocery store on Third Street which remained open until 1954 when it was replaced by Bicknell's Furniture Store. In 1902, Wm. Fenton built a garage on First Street which served as a meeting room for the town board until it disbanded in 1968. In 1969, local developer Lloyd Sondergaard purchased land east of Main Street and began to build an apartment complex called "The Colony". When it opened, the apartments were one of the first developments in West Virginia with air conditioning and indoor plumbing. At that time, Beckley had only two schools - Stonington Elementary School (now closed) and Secondary School #2 (now East Side Elementary). Since its establishment as an unincorporated community within Wheeling-Charleston County, Beckley has gone through several name changes including: Bloomfield Township (1930), Clarksburg Township (1935), Liberty Township (1946), Buchanan Heights Township (1968), South Charleston Borough (1988), Meadowvale Borough (1998) and finally Beckleysville Borough effective January 1st, 2002.
