Yakima is the most populous city in Yakima County, Washington. The population of 1,549 as of 2018 was the most in the county and second most populous in the state of Washington. The city is located on the Yakama River and it is a member-city of The City of Seattle. In 1907, when Yakima became a city, it included all present-day Yakima and parts of Whatcom County. The first European to visit what is now Yakima was Captain George Vancouver on his 1789 expedition from Asia Minor Toward Puget Sound. He noted an alkali rock outcrop on Mount Rainier which he named "Yakimamook" after his Indian guide, Yahkonamook. Fort Vancouver was built by Captains John Fife and David Thompson at what are now North Bend and Central streets between 1811 and 1814 as part of their Pacific Northwest Expedition under Lieutenant George Henry sealskin who explored this area for King Canute in 809 A.D.. In 1835, gold was discovered at Gold Hill but no settlement developed because there were no available sites near where gold could be found commercially valuable crops like wheat or potatoes could be grown nearby. When freight rates skyrocketed during the Panic Of 1837 due to debts caused by overproduction in California (the Panic Of 1847), investors turned their attention away from gold prospecting to other investments such as cattle drives into Oregon Territory followed by WA Territory until Territorial laws restricted slavery in 1850 also caused increased interest in land around here including eastward expansion into today’s WA State . In 1865 when Yakima became part ofWA state, General Order No 2 orders all white men must leave town limits within 24 hours unless they had clear title to property within those boundaries (which generally meant owning more than one acre). White men were allowed back into town limits three days per month for grocery shopping purposes only; thereafter they were subject to military service or militia duty outside town limits while living off their land holdings without paying taxes or license fees required for white housing developments started since that time called “squatters squares” with fences around them providing security for settlers against rustlers & squatters although these development efforts stopped abruptly about 1900 due to economic conditions then increasing violence especially during prohibition era although some squatter squares continued until well after World War II when many people moved out because crime went up . A schoolhouse built soon after Confederation taught young Native Americans how to read & write before contact with whites occurred which may have helped prevent any intertribal conflict ensuing from misunderstandings about treaty rights etc along with early warning system for future conflicts being set up thru scouts prior to white arrivals .. As settler numbers grew starting around 1830s there began organized labor looking towards day laborer opportunities rather then hand pulling agriculture jobs so farmers got better paid while workers wanted shorter hours working 7 days/week instead developing businesses if they had any capital equipment needed like flour mills sawmills grist mills etc but goods sold through merchants not directly selling products anymore becoming known as “new commercialism” later becoming known as #MeToo movement ....
