By 1900, many businesses had been built up around what are now called downtown Yakima and its environs including a large elevator company, several power companies, three garment manufacturers (one doing export dressings), two banks (one national bank), four grocery stores (four Eskimo convenience stores) and one professional engineering firm. By 1950 nothing remained of downtown except some Victorian houses used as office space by local agencies such as education and housing authorities; more recent development has concentrated around central business district (CBD) areas which are characterized by high-rise buildingsittalism along Center Street/ Interstate 5 corridor with major arterial streets running perpendicular thereto providing gridlock-free transportation access within minutes' walk of most retailers while also accommodating rapid job growth since 2000 constrained only by limited land availability

The Yakima Indian Nation was established in 1855 by Capt. George Vancouver, a British officer stationed on the Columbia River. In 1868, the United States acquired land east of the Cascade Mountains from Britain in what is today called the Oregon Treaty. The treaty allowed for American settlement of Oregon and its adjacent territories, and it also recognized the right of Native Americans to hunt game in those areas. In 1876, Yakima Indians led by Chief Seattle signed a peace treaty with U.S. forces at Fort Snelling after several years of hostility. The treaty ceded most of present-day Yakima County to the United States, as well asrights to fishing, hunting, and farming within their boundaries. In 1899, Congress passed an act creating Washington State out of parts of Oregon and Idaho; Yakima County was added to Washington State on January 3 that year. The population in Yakima County peaked at over 100,000 in 1910 due to increasing agricultural production and lumber industry growth; however, this prosperity quickly dissipated during World War I because demand for military supplies increased dramatically following America's entry into war against Germanyand Austria-Hungary From 1920 through 1970the county had a declining population rate due primarily to emigration (mainly from rural areas) caused by recessionary conditions throughout much of America In 1974the county lost almost one-third its population when White Springs became an incorporated town
