In 1958, Yakima voters passed an ordinance declaring themselves a "dry" community - this effectively ended alcohol sales in the city limits for all purposes including drinking water - thus helping solidify Yakama’s status as an agricultural center while also maintaining some degree of local autonomy. In 1984, new annexations made up part of Eagle Lake Township increased its population by almost 50%. At that time, only 7% of Yakama County residents lived within city limits while 99% resided within unincorporated areas or rural districts

Yakima, Washington is a small town located in the Yakima Valley in central Washington. The population was 7,912 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Yakima County. The first Europeans to visit Yakima were fur traders from Vancouver, British Columbia. In 1855, Drury and his group of soldiers explored the valley and named it "Yakima" for John Yakimakin, an American fur trader who had preceded them on their journey northward from Fort Hall. In 1859, gold was discovered near present-day Issaquah by James Wickersham and other miners working for prospectors George Stephenson and Asa Gray. The discovery led to a boom in mining activity in the Yakima Valley; by 1860 there were over 20 mines operating in the area. By 1870, however, placer mining had become dominant due to excessive exploration and development; only two mines remained open at that point. In 1862 Governor Isaac Stevens approved a land grant to Moses Easley for a irrigation canal system linking Puget Sound with the Great Lakes region; this helped spur growth in agriculture around what is now downtown Yakima. By 1865, most of what is now downtown was built as part of that canal system. The valley experienced somesignificant changes during World War II as many of its residents served in the military or took part in production work at local munitions plants. After the war ended, many families moved out of the valley and it slowly declined thereafter until it became largely rural again by 2000.
