Yakima, Washington is located in the northwestern corner of Washington state and occupies a land area of 724 square miles. As of the 2010 census, the population was 827. In 1959, it became one of two cities in Washington state (the other being Seattle) on which voters passed a referendum declaring themselves an independent city with its own police force and budget. The history and culture associated with Yakima are rich and include influences from many different parts of the world. Some examples include: traditional Native American fishing methods such as "tacoma" (a type of spearfishing), huckleberry hunting (particularly for huckleberries that are used in pies), agriculture (mainly corn farming), as well as European settler influence including white evangelical Christianity which began to arrive in what is now Yakima County about 1850; logging begun by early settlers seeking logs that could be transported downriver for shipment to mills in Puget Sound; various types of housing built by immigrants who arrived during various waves throughout the late 1800s; and later development influenced by Boeing plants that were established here beginning in World War II. Today, there are numerous businesses providing services such as health care or catering to residents within the city limits while also supporting agricultural activities adjacent to downtown where there is a wide range ol architecture including Victorian style buildings dating back to 1865 along with Periodic Table Building erected in 1947 honoring contributions from Northwest scientists including Ernest Rutherford and John Lennon
The Yakima area was first settled by the Skagit, Tlingit and other tribes in the 18th century. In 1792, the fur-traders George Vancouver and James Cook named the area Yakima after Chief Yakama. The first white settlers arrived in 1847 and began to explore what is now Yakima County. The land was surveyed in 1850, but no action was taken until 1861 when a post office was established at Nisqually River. By 1865, there were over 150 residents living on the site of present-day Yakima. The first school in Yakima County was built in 1870 and classes were held at various locations until 1889 when it became a town. In 1896, Yakima become an incorporated city with limited rights to self-governance.
