Yakima is a city in Snohomish County, Washington, United States. The population was 508 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Yakima was first settled by the Suquamish and other local tribes in 1792. The first European to visit Yakima was Captn Lewis and his men on their way from Ethernet Bay to Point Defiance in 1794; they were looking for a route to the Pacific Ocean. In 1853, gold was found oncolony property east of the city limits; this led to town growth. The land that makes up Yakima was first settled by indigenous people who named it "Lake Wapato." The first Europeans to visit this area were fur traders from Vancouver Island in 1827, and they called the area "Wapato" because of the many waterfalls that can be seen near the town today. In 1852, David Denny established an agricultural settlement on what is now the northwest corner of present-day Yakima and Northport Streets. Denny named his community after Mount Rainier which he had seen from his farmhouse on Lake Wapato. He also built a mill for grinding maize into flour which he operated until 1872 when he sold it to John Jacob Astor for $1 million dollars. In 1861, Congress passed legislation calling for a survey of all Northwest Territory including Yakima County so that it could be divided into homesteads corresponding to acreage surveyed. The first residents arrived in small groups over the next few years, but it wasn't until 1870 that more than 100 people arrived when James Fetterman donated land east of Interstate 90 for a concentration camp for Native Americans known as Alcatraz (today's Mount Rainier National Park). Alcatraz was used as a prison until 1934 when it closed following the successful prosecution of American Mafia boss Joseph Bonanno there. In 1907, local farmers developed what became known as "the Great Northern Road", which connected Everett with Tacoma via Moses Lake and Spokane Heights before reaching downtown Yakima downtown in 1912. This road shortened travel time between these cities by 25 miles or so making them easier access points for farmers looking to market their products throughout much of northwestern Washington during this time period! By 1930, most major villages within Council Bluffs along I-90 had either been founded or moved away from central Yakima due to development pressures brought about by aluminum production in nearby Kentwood and Tukwila while Boeing's massive aircraft plant remained operational right next door! Yakima Valley is located in southern Washington and straddles the border of Oregon. The fertile valley has been inhabited by the Yakama for over 10,000 years and was named after the Yakama word for "land of the silver salmon." In 1853, the first white settlers arrived in what is now Yakima Valley. They were prospectors looking for new land to exploit. The area that would eventually become Yakima Valley was part of a large ranch called Rancho Cascadia that was owned by George Cascadia. After some initial struggles, he became one of the early farmers in this region. He began to grow crops and sell goods from his farmstead near present-day Interstate 5 and East Main Street. In 1887, George Cascadia's son John Cascadia organized a group of farmers to form the Latin American Land Company to purchase additional ranchlands in what is now Yakima Valley. This venture led to many important changes for Yakima Valley as it became an agricultural center for Western Washington. The company developed roads, schools, churches and other infrastructure that helped drive growth throughout these years. During World War II, most of what is now Yakima Valley was taken over by Army troops as they fought in Europe. Many homes and businesses were destroyed during this time but much else survived including mills which continue to be used today as small businesses or apartments. After the war, most farmland became available once again so farming activities returned to Yakima Valley and continued until recently when demand from residents shifted towards housing developments such as those found along I-5 corridor. Today, there are numerous properties within Yacoma City limits that are significant due to their historical significance or because they are currently popular tourist destinations such as Mount Rainier National Park or Cascade Locks National Recreation Area
The Yakima Valley is home to many of the Northwest's most famous landmarks, including Mount Rainier and Seattle's Space Needle. The valley was first settled by the Yakama Nation in the late 1800s, and today it is a major agricultural and industrial center.
