In 1940, federal law changed which counties were divided into congressional districts; as a result, Yakima became part of Republickan 5th district (which included all but Spokane) instead of its original 4th district (including parts of what are now Spokane and Tacoma). The 5th district was redrawn in 1990 based on Census data showing that those living within its borders had shifted more towards Democratic Party voting since 1990 than those living outside them (although Republican voters remain dominant throughout most western WA). As a result Yakima falls within both current 1st DISTRICT Congressman Cathy McMorris Rodgers' political jurisdiction and former 3rd DISTRICT Congressman Rick Larsen's statistical jurisdiction while also possessing geographically contiguous portions west/northwest thereof lying within House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's jurisdictional boundaries.- so whether or not an individual lives within Congressional District Boundaries they will likely have some form or influence over local politics due to their proximity thereto
