The first permanent settler in what is now Woodinville was David Hill in 1851. Hill and his family were among the initial arrivals to what would become Woodinville when Seattle was founded on December 15, 1853. Hill built himself a cabin on land he obtained from Peter Golding, who had also founded Seattle. He named his cabin "Hillsborough" after his home parish in Durham, England. The first post office for Kingdom county was established at Hillsborough in 1857 and continued to be called that until it changed its name to Woodinville on October 10, 1865 due to an act of the Washington State Legislature which said "all places with similar names... shall have different names." The first school in what is now Woodinville opened its doors on November 9, 1857 as an academy under the name of John Noble Academy; it served students until 1862 when it became an high school under the name of Snohomish High School (later renamed Pacific Northwest University). In 1909 Snohomish High School moved from its original location near Lake Union Boulevard into what is now downtown Woodinville; this building still stands today as part of the old campus of UW–Everett. In 1931 Pioneer High School opened adjacent to Snohomish High School and remained so until 1972 when both schools merged into UW–Everett. In 1907 lumberman Aube Denny started cutting logs for a new paper mill which would produce pulp for newspapers across Puget Sound north of Seattle; however upon completion of construction he decided not to put his plant into operation because he found that wood prices were too low and he could have made more money by selling products other than pulpwood. Denny's successor, Hannon & Sons Paper Mill began operations soon afterward but failed within two years due to oversupply caused by World War I interruptions in transportation and demand for war materials throughout much of America which depressed lumber prices even further..
