In 1792, George Vancouver explored Puget Sound and called the area "Wooden Valley." He named one of the tributaries of the woody Creek "Woolf's River". In 1810, John Wesley Powell explored what is now Woodinville when he was part of his mapping expedition for USGS Survey #3. On July 20, 1811, while exploring what is now Walla Walla County (the present-day Columbia River Gorge), Powell named a small stream east of today's Woolf's River after General James Woolridge – an officer with US forces during the Mexican–American War and later Ulysses S. Grant’s Secretary of War (1865-1869). In 1907, when Wenatchee became an incorporated city and Woodinville became an unincorporated town subject to Wenatchee City Limits Act No. 21-1907,[1] both towns had populations under 10 residents. On February 18th 2007, both towns merged into Wenatchee!

The town of Woodinville was founded in 1847 by Christopher and Mary Woolridge. The Woolridges were the first permanent settlers in what is now Woodinville. They built a log cabin on the current site of the city hall, which served as their home until 1853. In that year, they sold their land to James K. Polk and John D. Rockefeller for $1,000 each. The town's first store opened in 1850. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewart Johnston was captured at Battle of Bull Run and imprisoned at Fort Sumter before being transferred to Fort McNair near Washington DC for trial. Woodinville residents raised money to buy Johnston freedom and he left Washington after his release in 1865. The town has been continuously populated since then with both American & foreign immigrants making it one of the most diverse communities in Washington County. During World War II, Woodinville played an important role as a munitions plant supplying the Allied forces during the Pacific Campaigns while also becoming known as "the capital of defense" due to its large population concentration within easy commuting distance of government buildings and other key military installations
