The mill continued operation until 1865 when it was destroyed by fire;[3] it remains one of only two remaining commercial mills in Northwest America still operating today.
The first European to explore the area was Captain George Vancouver, who discovered the Strait of Georgia in 1792. The next year, lumber baron John Jacob Astor leased land on the eastern side of Puget Sound and began building a sawmill. In 1851, Washington Territory was created from parts of Oregon and Washington and named after President James K. Polk to promote development within the new territory. By 1870, Tacoma had become the largest city in Washington Territory with over 100,000 residents.
